On Saturday April 22, 2017, the Calgary Association of the RWA held its Spring Workshop at the Delta Calgary South. Our featured speaker was bestselling author Eve Silver.
In the morning, Eve led a plotting workshop and demonstrated how to use GMC (goal, motivation, conflict) to craft not only our stories, but our synopses and blurbs. Both pantzers and plotters learned a lot. This was followed by Eve’s “Publishing 101” – an overview of both traditional and self-publishing factors to consider. Again, we all came away with much needed information.
In the afternoon, Eve gave us a Live Action Blue Pencil. Sixteen (mostly) anonymous writers submitted a collection of synopses, blurbs, pitches and queries. Eve’s comments were helpful and humorous and everyone learned from this exercise. Many thanks to those who submitted their work!
Eve briefly mentioned Three Act Structure but since most of us know it, she did not spend a lot of time discussing it. However, she posted this on the whiteboard and lots of people took pictures of her notes.
As usual, after the workshop, we debriefed. This time we were at the Delta’s Boomtown Pub.
This was our first time at the Delta Calgary South. Several of our out-of-town members, as well as our guest speaker, stayed at the hotel. The logistics were wonderful.
Thank you to everyone who attended!
