On Saturday, October 21, 2017, CARWA held its first meeting in Edmonton.
Twenty-one writers met in the lounge at the Strathcona Community Centre from noon until about 4:30 pm. They came from near and far: 7 from Edmonton, 7 from Calgary, and 1 each from Sherwood Park, Claresholm, Bawlf, Wetaskiwin, Red Deer, Sylvan Lake . . . and Keewatin, Ontario.
The meeting started off with snacks, mingling and an icebreaker. Program Chair Emily Vale arranged for the following presenters:
- Win Day – “Back up strategies for authors”
- Jill Flanagan – “Finding your ideal reader”
- Jennifer Howard – “Covers: What not to do”
- Jennifer Snow – “Tightening up sentences for stronger writing”
Following the meeting, many of us headed over to “Have Mercy Southern Table & Bar” for dinner and more talk.
Several of the attendees stayed at Whyte Avenue’s Varscona Hotel, where we sampled the wine and brainstormed late into the night.
A good time was had by all and we decided to build the CARWA North meeting into the schedule for next year.
Thanks to everyone who made the day a success!
